It doesn’t matter if it’s a music festival or a corporate meeting; food trucks are quickly becoming the event caterers of choice across the country. However, hiring a food truck comes with its own set of considerations you don’t face with a conventional caterer.

  1. Obtain special permits and insurance– A food truck requires a special set of permits and insurance to operate. Also, check the city or town’s ordinance. Some places only allow food trucks on private property.
  2. Carefully examine contracts– There isn’t a common food truck contract, so make sure to read the fine print.
  3. Does your venue accommodate a food truck?– Although the site may not allow food trucks on the premises, there are other things to consider. Some food trucks cannot climb steep grades or they may require a gas or electrical hookup.
  4. Think about the menu– Many food trucks offer tons of menu options, but this could complicate the entire catering process. Instead, ask the food truck to limit the menu to just a few options.
  5. Calculate required food– You can only fit so much food in the back of a truck. Make sure to provide an accurate number of guests so the food truck can prepare accordingly.
